Queensland police warn Waze users against speeding after camera alerts

Daily Mail ·

Queensland Police have warned drivers who use Waze alerts to slow down briefly near speed cameras, then speed again, that they may be caught and fined. Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho said officers would seek to penalise motorists and could take away their driving privileges; researchers say the practice makes enforcement harder.

University of the Sunshine Coast researchers used laser devices to measure more than 9,000 drivers and found that half were speeding before slowing when a Waze camera alert appeared. The pattern was reported across different speed limits and road settings, including school zones and roadworks. The warning comes amid more than 1,300 road deaths recorded in Australia over the past 12 months, while some drivers argue alerts encourage people to slow down.
