Clifford "Cliff" Robinson, a 51-year-old gym owner from Rockhampton, Queensland, took his own life on 31 July, just two days before a scheduled appointment with a psychologist, his devastated family has revealed. The father-of-five had struggled with mental health issues for much of his life, a battle that worsened after the CrossFit gym he co-owned with his wife Laini closed unexpectedly around a year before his death, leaving the couple in financial hardship. His death has shocked the local community, as he continued working as a fly-in fly-out miner to support his family and had actively been seeking help.

Robinson spent the year before his death in and out of the local hospital's mental health unit, yet his wife said he remained resilient and was "the last person" she expected to take his own life. The night before he died, the couple celebrated the return of their autistic son, Cliffy, 24, who had placed fourth at the CrossFit Adaptive Games World Championships in the US. Laini has since called for an overhaul of what she described as a "broken" mental health system, vowed to continue the couple's hydration and fitness initiative, Hydr8tion N8tion, in his memory, and a fundraiser has raised almost $6,000 to help with funeral costs.
