A Newspoll survey suggests nearly two-thirds of Australians want migration reduced, highlighting immigration as a major political issue. The findings come as the Albanese government announces measures to lower migration, tighten visa rules and prioritise workers in key industries.

Among 1,244 voters, 66% supported fewer migrant arrivals, while 28% favoured maintaining current levels and 6% wanted an increase. Support for cuts was highest among One Nation and Coalition voters, but lower among Labor and Greens supporters; net overseas migration has already fallen to 292,100 annually from a post-pandemic peak of 556,000.
