Australia turn to Hussey ahead of Ashes after batting slump
Australia have appointed former batter Mike Hussey as a long-term consultant coach to address weaknesses in their batting ahead of a demanding run of fixtures, including next year’s Ashes in England. The move follows a decline in their Test form and comes as Pat Cummins’ side face scrutiny after two unexpected series defeats.
Hussey’s role will also cover next year’s 50-over World Cup and an advisory position for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the following T20 World Cup. He will start during Australia’s T20 series against England from 21 November and help prepare for the home Test series against New Zealand; he has played 302 matches for Australia and previously coached England’s 2022 T20 World Cup-winning side.
In short
- Mike Hussey returns to Australia’s coaching staff as a long-term consultant.
- The appointment follows defeats by South Africa and Bangladesh.
- His work will span the Ashes, World Cup and Olympic preparations.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Bringing in a highly experienced former batter could give Australia’s players focused technical guidance and fresh perspective as they address a run of poor results. A long-term role may also help build continuity across formats and prepare the squad for major tournaments, including the Ashes.
The case against
Appointing a prominent former player does not by itself show that coaching is the main cause of Australia’s batting decline, and another voice could add complexity to existing staff and methods. A broad remit across several formats and tournaments may also dilute attention from the immediate task of improving Test batting.
