Awlad Hossain, a 51-year-old Queensland man, has been arrested and accused of sending more than $90,000 to Bangladesh in an attempt to influence the investigation into his estranged wife's suspicious death. Rehana Parvin, a dual Australian-Bangladeshi citizen and mother of five, was found dead in September 2024 buried next to a septic tank on her sister-in-law's property. This marks the first occasion the Australian Federal Police has prosecuted a foreign bribery charge, highlighting the seriousness of allegations that Hossain sought to obstruct a murder investigation.

The transfers were made over two years to associates in Bangladesh, with some allegedly intended for Bangladeshi police officials, though authorities stress there is "absolutely no evidence" the money reached any officials or affected the investigation. Hossain's alleged objectives included having his name removed from Bangladeshi police records. He remains in custody and appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court, with his lawyer indicating he intends to contest the charges on grounds of "evidentiary deficiencies" in the prosecution case. Both Australian and Bangladeshi investigations into Ms Parvin's death continue, with Australian authorities confirming the cooperation from Bangladesh authorities has remained strong throughout.
