Ava DuVernay's documentary "14th" will have its world premiere as the closing night film of the New York Film Festival on 9 October at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. The screening carries symbolic weight, coming a decade after DuVernay's Oscar-nominated "13th" opened the same festival in 2016; where that film examined the US Constitution's 13th Amendment and its links to mass incarceration, "14th" turns to the 14th Amendment's guarantees of birthright citizenship, due process and equal protection, arguing these principles are now under sustained attack.

The film features interviews with figures including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Anna Paulina Luna, legal experts Sherrilyn Ifill, Robert Chang and Stacey Abrams, and commentators such as Donald T. Critchlow and Hasan Piker. Netflix will release "14th" on its streaming platform later this year, with DuVernay saying she hopes it leaves audiences "debating, questioning, and, above all, imagining what is still possible." NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim praised the film as "a movie for the moment," while DuVernay noted the poignancy of returning to close the festival exactly ten years after "13th" opened it.
