Aang: The Last Airbender to get brief cinema run

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, the animated sequel to Nickelodeon's beloved series, has been given a limited cinema release alongside its Paramount Plus streaming debut, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over the film's fate. Paramount and Nickelodeon had previously scrapped plans for a theatrical showing, disappointing fans, before footage from the film leaked online; the alleged leaker was subsequently arrested, and the studios ultimately reversed course to give the film a brief big-screen run before it reaches streaming.
The film will show for one week, from 24 to 30 July, at just two US cinemas: AMC Burbank 8 in Los Angeles and AMC Empire 25 in New York, with around three screenings a day at each, opening a day ahead of its streaming release. Co-creator Bryan Konietzko described it as a "very limited, award-qualifying theatrical run," with tickets on sale from 16 July and an additional screening held at San Diego Comic-Con. The story follows an adult Aang searching for an ancient power to save the Air Nomads from extinction, with a voice cast including Eric Nam, Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun and Dee Bradley Baker, alongside stars such as Taika Waititi and Ke Huy Quan.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated fantasy series set in a world where some people can control air, water, earth or fire. Aang is the Avatar, the only person able to master all four elements, and is expected to keep balance between the world’s nations.
The original series followed Aang as a young boy, while later stories have explored other characters and periods in the same world. This film moves the story on by depicting Aang as an adult and focusing on the survival of the Air Nomads, the people from whom he comes.
Nickelodeon, which made the original programme, is part of Paramount, the company releasing the film through cinemas and its Paramount Plus streaming service. The project has drawn attention because its release plans changed after the intended cinema debut was cancelled, and because it brings a well-known television franchise back to the big screen.
