The directors of "Avengers: Endgame," Joe and Anthony Russo, have publicly congratulated "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" for surpassing their film's domestic opening weekend box office record. The Marvel filmmakers took to Instagram to praise director Destin Daniel Cretton and stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, following a long-standing tradition of directors passing the torch when box office milestones are broken, echoing James Cameron's gracious acknowledgement of "Endgame" in 2019 when it overtook his "Titanic."

"Brand New Day" opened to $360 million domestically, edging past "Endgame's" previous record of $357 million from 2019, making them the only two films to exceed $300 million in an opening weekend. "Endgame" still holds the record for the biggest global opening at $1.2 billion, compared with "Brand New Day's" $927 million worldwide debut, and remains the second highest-grossing film ever with $2.7 billion. The Russo brothers will get a swift chance to reclaim the record when their "Endgame" sequel, "Avengers: Doomsday," opens on 18 December.
