Azure maintenance mess disrupts hybrid clouds, VPNs, cloudy VMware services
Microsoft has reported degraded or interrupted connectivity affecting Azure ExpressRoute Gateway, VPN Gateway and Azure VMware services, following an incident that began at 20:30 UTC on 30 September. The disruption may hinder customers linking on-premises systems to Azure, including those running hybrid cloud environments, and has also caused failures in some network management operations.
The issue affects 18 Azure regions, though Azure VMware is unaffected in the last four listed by Microsoft. By 23:13 UTC, Microsoft said ExpressRoute gateways were recovering and that it was monitoring the recovery; some VPN gateways had reduced redundancy rather than a total loss of connectivity. The company has paused infrastructure servicing linked to the incident and is restoring management components, while investigating a possible connection to operating system servicing activity.
