Back to the future: Sony’s iconic headphones are making a comeback nearly 50 years later
Sony has revived its 1979 MDR-3 headphones as the MDR-3R, keeping the original retro look while adding USB-C connectivity and a built-in microphone. The launch taps into renewed interest in wired headphones and offers listeners a nostalgic alternative to modern designs.
The headphones retain blue and orange ear pads and use reengineered 23mm drivers, aiming for balanced sound and natural vocals rather than advanced features such as noise cancellation. Parts are made from recycled plastic, and a limited-edition Stranger Things version has red and black ear pads, the series logo and custom packaging; both versions are available to buy or pre-order at select retailers.
