Bad Day at the Office review – gratuitously entertaining Go-Pro thriller is like Crank meets The Hangover
*Bad Day at the Office* is a fast-paced action thriller starring John Hannah as an amnesiac who wakes in a hotel room with a dead body and is soon pursued through London’s criminal underworld. Shot largely from first-person GoPro perspectives, the film uses elaborate action and visual gimmicks to make its hero’s parkour escapes feel plausible.
The review finds the film entertainingly inventive but exhausting, with its frantic pace and novelty eventually giving way to a conventional gangland revenge plot. Hannah’s character must keep his heart rate down by taking pills, while the action includes a killer-clown DJ and improvised weapons; at 111 minutes, the film feels much longer. It opens in UK and Irish cinemas on 30 October.
In short
- John Hannah stars in a frantic first-person action thriller.
- The inventive action eventually yields to a familiar revenge plot.
- The 111-minute film opens in UK and Irish cinemas on 30 October.
Explained simply
Bad Day at the Office is a British action thriller starring John Hannah, who plays a man with no memory of how he came to be in a hotel room beside a dead body. As he tries to escape, he is drawn into London’s criminal underworld and pursued by people who may know more about his past than he does.
The film is shot largely from the central character’s point of view, using camera techniques that put viewers close to the action. Its story combines a mystery about his identity with chases and fights, while his need to keep his heart rate down adds another constraint to his attempts to get away.
