The update fulfils a feature fans had anticipated since Microsoft accidentally leaked it in a store listing last autumn, and it arrives alongside a 30% discount marking the game's third anniversary, making it a strong entry point for newcomers.

Xbox Play Anywhere lets players buy a supported title once and use it across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, carrying over cloud saves, progress and achievements, which suits devices like the ROG Xbox Ally X. Third-party support for the programme remains patchy, though it includes major titles such as The Outer Worlds 2, Doom: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, making Baldur's Gate 3 one of its highest-profile additions. The game's universe also continues expanding beyond Larian's involvement, with a T. Kingfisher prequel novel about Astarion, an unaffiliated Dark Horse comic series, and an HBO television adaptation from Craig Mazin all in development, though HBO has released few further details.
