Bangladesh moved closer to a first-ever Test victory in Australia after taking four wickets in the hosts’ second innings on day three in Darwin. Steve Smith’s dismissal for 44 was particularly important, leaving Australia still 67 runs behind and facing a difficult effort to save the match.

Bangladesh made 426 in their first innings, led by Tanzid Hasan’s 101, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 65; Josh Hazlewood took 6-89 and reached 300 Test wickets. Australia were 161-4 at stumps, with Cameron Green unbeaten on 43 and Alex Carey on 19, while Hasan Mahmud had earlier removed both openers after taking 6-55 in the first innings.
