Federal Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has publicly distanced One Nation from a candidate who claimed LGBTQI people have a mental illness, insisting the party is instead "one of the gayest parties in Australia". His comments came after a video surfaced showing Western Australian upper house candidate Parminder Singh making the anti-gay remarks, prompting the party to remove him from its website. The episode has drawn scrutiny to One Nation's candidate vetting processes ahead of the 2025 election.

Singh had been placed third on One Nation's WA upper house ticket before the video emerged. Joyce told ABC TV the remarks were highly offensive and did not reflect the party, saying it has "quite a large proportion of gay people" who neither want to be "glorified" nor "vilified", while acknowledging that rapid growth had strained the party's vetting capacity. Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie declined to comment directly on the candidate but rejected the claim that gay people are mentally ill, adding that some in the LGBTQI community were joining the Nationals and Liberals out of dissatisfaction with the Labor government and concerns about Islamic extremism.
