Third-party AI agents have placed only hundreds of DoorDash orders

Ars Technica ·

DoorDash chief executive Tony Xu said external AI agents have generated only several hundred orders since their launch on the platform. The figure is tiny beside DoorDash’s nearly one billion orders in the third quarter of 2026, suggesting that, for now, customers still tend to order food directly through the app.

The company introduced an open-standard connector for third-party AI tools less than a month ago, and it remains limited to a small group of beta partners, mainly for corporate lunch orders. Xu said agents may be more useful for complex purchases that involve research and planning. DoorDash’s own “Ask DoorDash” feature is separate: the company says it builds baskets five times faster, with average order values nearly 50% higher and about 60% more unique items than comparable traditional orders.

In short

  • External AI agents have made only several hundred DoorDash orders.
  • DoorDash processed nearly one billion orders in Q3 2026.
  • Its own AI ordering feature is seeing larger baskets.
