The deaths represent a sharp increase on the state’s usual toll and highlight the risk posed when warm coastal water enters open cuts or wounds.

Vibrio vulnificus occurs naturally in warm coastal waters and is part of the wider Vibrio group of bacteria. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, infections can become severe or life-threatening, particularly when contaminated seawater enters broken skin; officials are urging people to take additional precautions before swimming.
