Beanies Wholefoods, a Sheffield worker co-operative founded in 1986, is approaching its 40th anniversary while continuing to operate from its Crookesmoor shop. The article argues that its shared ownership, local relationships and focus on seasonal organic food have helped it endure changes in retail, rising costs and the pandemic, offering a community-centred alternative to highly centralised food systems.

Originally based in Hillsborough, Beanies later moved to Barber Road, expanded its product range and veg box scheme, and adopted digital tools without making online retail its main model. It has long-standing links with growers, suppliers, customers and staff, including members who have worked there for 30 years; its anniversary celebration is planned for 6 September.
