Beck has announced his 15th studio album, Ride Lonesome, due on 18 September via Capitol Records, and has previewed it with a new single, “In the Night”, plus a cinematic video. The release is significant because it marks his first album of new material since 2019’s Hyperspace and shows him returning with a record shaped by long-running collaborators from key earlier projects. It also underlines that the gap between albums was not inactivity, but a prolonged period of writing and studio work after the disruption of Covid.

Rolling Stone reports that Beck first shared the title track in April and later issued an expanded version featuring Sierra Ferrell, while “In the Night” arrives as the second single. The song was produced by Beck, mixed by Nigel Godrich, and features musicians connected to Morning Phase and Sea Change; its video was directed by Mikai Karl and stars French actor Denis Lavant. Beck said he had been writing prolifically, built a studio, and reunited in Hollywood with musicians from those earlier albums, with the chemistry having deepened over time; the 12-track album will be supported by a North American tour beginning in Vancouver on 16 September and ending in Nashville on 31 October.

Beck is an American singer, songwriter and producer known for moving between styles including alternative rock, folk, hip-hop and electronic music. He first became widely known in the 1990s with the offbeat hit Loser, and has since built a career around changing his sound from album to album.

Some of his best-known records include Sea Change, a stripped-back and reflective 2002 album, and Morning Phase, which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2015. Nigel Godrich, a producer and mixer best known for his work with Radiohead, has been an important collaborator across parts of Beck’s career.

Beck’s more recent work has included colourful pop, experimental production and collaborations with other artists. His return to musicians associated with earlier albums places the new project in the context of a long-running career that has often balanced new approaches with familiar creative partnerships.
