Andros Townsend, the 35-year-old former England winger now playing for PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was struck by a pitch roller during warm-ups before a match in Pattani, Thailand on Saturday. A staff member lost control of the heavy vehicle, which ran over his left leg, but remarkably Townsend escaped with only bumps and bruises. He went on to play in the team's 3-0 victory, though his team-mates urged him to seek medical attention.

Townsend described the incident as "terrifying" whilst speaking publicly about it for the first time on Piers Morgan's Football Uncensored. The former Tottenham, Luton and Crystal Palace forward, who has undergone operations on both his ankle and knee during his career, feared those previously injured joints would be damaged. He credited falling at the right moment and his team-mates' assistance in lifting the roller off him with enabling his escape. Townsend said the incident would not deter him from continuing his career.
