Berlinale Title ‘Members of the Problematic Family’ to Open Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 5 hours ago

The Tamil-language drama "Members of the Problematic Family" will open the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), marking its Australian premiere following an earlier world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. The selection underscores IFFM's growing status as a key international platform for Indian cinema, with organisers highlighting the film's blend of Tamil cultural specificity and universal themes of grief and family.

Directed by R. Gowtham, the film follows Prabha, a young man whose sudden death sets off a 16-day mourning ritual that exposes long-buried tensions among his mother, uncle and cousins. IFFM runs from 13 to 23 August 2026 in Melbourne, with the opening night screening on 14 August; Gowtham and lead actor Karuththadayan will attend. The film is also nominated for best indie film and best director in the festival's IFFM Awards competition.
