England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred after sustaining a knee injury during the recent one-day international series against India. The 22-year-old had been named captain of Birmingham Phoenix for the season, making this a significant setback given he is widely regarded as a future England leader and had already captained the side in a T20 series against Ireland last year. His absence is particularly notable as he had been in excellent form, earning player of the match in Sunday's series decider at Lord's with 91 runs and figures of 1-49.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said Bethell underwent an MRI scan on Monday but has given no timescale for his return, though England's Test series against Pakistan begins on 19 August. South Africa's Donovan Ferreira, a two-time Hundred champion with Oval Invincibles, will take over as Phoenix captain, with the team's opening match against Trent Rockets at Edgbaston on Friday. Bethell, who plays county cricket for Warwickshire, was retained by Phoenix earlier this year on a contract worth £340,000.
