Explained simply

The Mayflower was the ship that brought English settlers known as the Pilgrims across the Atlantic in 1620. They established a settlement at Plymouth, in what is now Massachusetts, where they faced difficult conditions and relied in part on relationships with the Wampanoag, the Indigenous people of the region.

The settlers’ ties with the Wampanoag included cooperation as well as conflict, and the colonies that followed developed their own political and cultural identities. These events are often discussed as part of the early history of the United States, though they took place long before the country was founded.
