Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus has publicly backed his daughter Miley's decision to drop her surname and go by just "Miley" ahead of her new album release. He shared his support on Instagram, noting he had always called her simply "Miley" at home and comparing her rebrand to mononymous stars such as Cher, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley and Prince, calling it a "natural progression for an iconic superstar legend."

Miley's tenth studio album, 'Bass Persuades', is due out on 18 September and will be her first release through Atlantic Records; she has described the record as capturing "every part of life." To mark the release she will play two rare shows at the Hollywood Bowl on 16 and 18 October, supported by Model/Actriz, with general sale tickets opening on 10 September. Billy Ray also referenced his own brief period performing simply as "Cyrus" before his 1992 hit 'Achy Breaky Heart'.
