Bionicle Fan-Made Game Devs Return with Rustbound, and It Looks Sick

Polygon · 2 hours ago

Unmasked Games, the volunteer developers behind the cancelled Bionicle fan game Masks of Power, have announced Rustbound, an original action-adventure project. The move matters because it lets the team build on eight years of experience after Lego asked it to stop work on the Bionicle-based game, reportedly over concerns that players could mistake it for an official product.

Rustbound is still in early development and has only been shown through a cinematic teaser, featuring a masked, robot-like figure in a desert landscape that turns ominously red. The studio has not said whether it reworked assets from Masks of Power or started anew, but the trailer retains visible influences from Bionicle; the previous game had been close to release, with its demo reportedly needing several months of polish.

  • Bionicle fan-game developers return with original project Rustbound.
  • Lego cancelled Masks of Power after eight years’ development.
  • Rustbound remains early in development but echoes Bionicle’s aesthetic.
