Carl Isom-McDaniel, a grandfather from Kendall, Washington, is recovering in hospital after being charged and thrown by a bison at Yellowstone National Park, leaving him with a broken leg. He has spoken publicly about the ordeal, describing how the animal appeared calm at first before singling him out as its target, and stressed how deceptively fast bison can move.

Speaking from his hospital bed at Bozeman Health in southwest Montana, Isom-McDaniel said the bison showed no signs of aggression until it picked him as its target and charged. He warned that bison "move faster than you could ever imagine", underlining the danger the animals pose to visitors even when they initially seem docile. The incident has drawn wider attention to bison safety at Yellowstone, with park officials separately reviewing what to do with the animal involved.
