Blue Planet III includes rawer footage to counter AI authenticity concerns

The Guardian ·

Blue Planet III will include some cloudier, less polished footage to show viewers that its remarkable underwater scenes are real, as concern about AI-generated images grows. Producers say no generative AI was used in the series, which returns nearly a decade after Blue Planet II and aims to show animal behaviour viewers have not seen before.

Filmed over four years across five oceans, the series uses new equipment including an underwater CCTV camera to capture dolphins using sea sponges to trap fish. Other scenes include 200,000 crabs feeding in formation and sea urchins sheltering under shells. The programme also covers ocean pressures, including warming seas damaging clownfish habitats and pollution, while using more local crews to reduce costs.

In short

  • Blue Planet III leaves some murky footage in to emphasise its authenticity.
  • Producers say no generative AI was used in the series.
  • New cameras captured animal behaviour across five oceans.

Explained simply

Blue Planet is a BBC nature series about life beneath the sea. Its earlier series brought underwater behaviour to a wide audience, and the latest was filmed across five oceans over four years, using new cameras to capture animals in their natural habitats.

The BBC’s natural history team makes the series, working with camera operators and local crews in different parts of the world. Its subjects include how sea animals find food and shelter, as well as the effects of warming seas and pollution on ocean habitats.

AI tools can now create convincing images, making it harder for viewers to tell whether striking footage is genuine. That has raised questions for wildlife programmes, where trust in what viewers see is central to how they present the natural world.
