Police on the South Korean holiday island of Jeju have found the bodies of four people who had been reported missing, amid growing public anger over allegations that officers mishandled missing persons cases. A police sergeant, surnamed Bu, has been arrested on suspicion of lying to victims' families and closing cases prematurely, prompting President Lee Jae Myung to order sweeping reform of the police force after the national police chief admitted "there is a fault in the system".

Among those found dead was 37-year-old Jang Mi-ran, missing since May, whose body was discovered on Monday at a palm tree farm near where she had been staying; she is believed to have taken her own life. Another victim, a man in his 60s missing since 28 June, was found on Saturday after Bu allegedly told his family he was "safe" but did not wish to disclose his location—51 days before his body turned up. Investigators are now reviewing almost 300 missing persons reports handled by Bu, amid criticism that South Korea's low crime rate has led police to assume most missing adults, of whom over 70,000 are reported annually, will quickly be found safe.
