The US Navy has selected Boeing to develop the F/A-XX, a carrier-based sixth-generation fighter intended to extend the reach of its aircraft carriers and strengthen air combat capabilities. The Department of War describes it as part of a broader effort to maintain an advantage in contested airspace and to operate alongside both crewed and uncrewed aircraft.

The contract is worth more than $20 billion and includes several test aircraft for ground trials, flight-safety assessments and the integration of systems and weapons. The programme sits within the Next Generation Air Dominance initiative; the aircraft is expected from the 2030s to augment and eventually replace some F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers. Boeing says technical details remain classified and that it is preparing a secure manufacturing facility in St Louis.
