BOFH: I talked to Claude and he says you’re an idiot

The Register ·

The Boss suspects the narrator and the PFY are using accumulated sick leave to take frequent one-day absences, with supposed illnesses appearing in alphabetical order. When challenged about missing medical certificates, the narrator says Claude reviewed the contract and supports their interpretation of its rules.

The Boss produces a written notice seeking to change those rules, but Claude reportedly argues that the change cannot apply retrospectively and requires mutual agreement. The exchange ends with the Boss pointing out that an email from Claude claiming the narrator has a dental abscess is not a medical certificate. The comic turns on the pair treating an AI chatbot as an authority in a workplace dispute.

In short

  • The narrator and PFY exploit accumulated sick leave.
  • Claude is recruited to interpret the contract.
  • The Boss challenges an AI-generated medical opinion.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

An employee could reasonably consult an AI tool to help understand contract wording, especially when trying to protect accrued leave and check whether a proposed change can apply to past absences. If the tool’s reading is accurate, asking for mutual agreement before changing the rules would support fair treatment and predictable employment terms.

The case against

An employer could reasonably argue that a chatbot’s interpretation is not a substitute for the contract, proper legal advice or evidence required by workplace policy. A message from an AI cannot verify an illness or serve as a medical certificate, and relying on it as authority risks confusing general guidance with the requirements of a real employment dispute.
