Marco Tapia, a 23-year-old Sydney medical student, was fatally shot in his family home in Glen Alpine on 1 September during a gang-related home invasion that police believe targeted the wrong address. Three masked intruders broke into the property and shot him whilst his mother, father and sister were present, though they were not injured. The incident has prompted charges against multiple individuals, including a 16-year-old boy and two men aged 22 and 23, arrested this week in Junee, New South Wales.

The case represents one of three fatal shootings across Sydney within five days, part of what appears to be a troubling pattern of mistaken identity violence. Detectives established Strike Force Gareno to investigate and have confirmed that the intended target was not at the address. Earlier arrests included two younger boys (aged 14 and 16) charged with staging vehicles and providing the weapon used in the shooting. The tragedy deeply affected Mr Tapia's family, particularly his sister Cassie, who was preparing for a November wedding where Marco was to have served as a groomsman.
