Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old New York Times technology executive, was shot dead in a car park in Dublin, California. His in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges; police say they took turns shooting him. The killing has brought renewed attention to allegations made in a domestic violence protection order filed by McKinsey’s wife, Candice Jang.

Jang’s 2025 court filings alleged that McKinsey physically and verbally abused her and their three children, including striking their six-year-old son and causing head injuries to both children. She described alleged abuse over 17 years and said a judge granted her a protection order. McKinsey had previously faced misdemeanor child-abuse charges and was released on $50,000 bail; he was seeking entry to a mental-health diversion programme. He denied Jang’s account and alleged in his own filings that she had abused him.
