Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer best known for "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has died at the age of 75 on 9 July. Billboard marked her passing with a retrospective of her chart career, which began in 1978 when "It's a Heartache" debuted on the Hot 100 amid a disco-dominated era topped by the Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever hits. Her signature power ballad made her the only Welsh-born artist ever to top the Hot 100, and her recordings left a lasting imprint on the American charts.

"It's a Heartache" peaked at No. 3 in June 1978, but Tyler said she lacked creative control at the time and changed management in 1981, subsequently working with writer-producer Jim Steinman. Steinman's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" spent four weeks at No. 1 from October 1983, featuring E Street Band members Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg, and has since drawn 2.3 billion in radio airplay audience and 897 million US streams, according to Luminate. Her 1984 hit "Holding Out for a Hero" from the Footloose soundtrack reached No. 34, and overall she scored three top 40 Hot 100 hits among six entries. The song enjoyed later revivals, including Nicki French's 1995 No. 2 cover and a sales surge following the April 2024 North American solar eclipse.
