Born 75 Years Ago Today in Texas, the “Harmonica Man to the Stars” Who Transformed Willie Nelson’s Sound
Mickey Raphael turns 75 on 7 November, marking a career closely tied to Willie Nelson: he joined Nelson’s backing band, The Family, in 1973 and has remained with him ever since. His harmonica playing is credited with helping reshape Nelson’s sound and broaden its appeal to younger listeners.
Raphael began playing music after being assigned the tuba in a school band, then learned guitar and developed his skills with help from session musician Don Brooks. He met Nelson at a Dallas post-game jam session hosted by University of Texas coach Darrell Royal, and gradually began travelling with the band. Beyond Nelson, Raphael has worked across genres with artists including Bob Dylan, Elton John, U2, Snoop Dogg and Chris Stapleton; he also records and tours with Stapleton when he is not working with Nelson.
