Rodney Crowell, born in Houston, Texas, on 7 August 1950, is profiled as an influential country songwriter, performer and producer. Mentored by Guy Clark and later a member of Emmylou Harris’s Hot Band, he helped bring his songs to a wider audience before establishing a successful solo career and writing hits for other artists.

Crowell began playing drums in his father’s honky-tonk band at 11 and moved to Nashville in 1972, where Jerry Reed helped him secure a publishing deal. His 1988 album *Diamonds & Dirt* became the first country album to produce five consecutive No. 1 singles, including the Grammy-winning “After All This Time”; he also produced albums for his first wife, Rosanne Cash. His Cherry Bombs backing band included future country figures such as Vince Gill and helped modernise the genre’s sound.
