Lynn Anderson, born 79 years ago today (26 September 1947) in North Dakota, was a pioneering female country music artist who achieved major crossover success during the 1970s. Her signature 1970 hit "(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden" dominated both pop and country charts, breaking significant barriers in a male-dominated industry. Anderson was the first female country artist to perform on The Tonight Show and to headline Madison Square Garden, paving the way for future generations of female country musicians.

Anderson grew up on a ranch in Sacramento, California, where her parents were both songwriters. She signed with Chart Records in 1966 and achieved early success with songs written by her mother, including her first top 40 hit "Ride, Ride, Ride." Her breakthrough came in 1970 when she moved to Columbia Records and released "Rose Garden," which spent five weeks at number one on the US country chart. Between 1970 and 1974, Anderson secured 15 Top Ten country hits overall, including multiple chart-toppers such as "How Can I Unlove You," "You're My Man," and "Keep Me in Mind." She died of a heart attack in Nashville on 30 July 2015, aged 67.
