‘Boston Blue’ Officially Shakes Up Its Winning Formula for Season 2

Collider · 2 hours ago

CBS's Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue is set to shake up its formula in season two with the return of Will Estes, reprising his Blue Bloods role, as a guest star. Series lead Donnie Wahlberg first teased the news in a video, and TV Insider has since confirmed Estes's appearance, a development likely to please fans of the wider franchise given the show's focus on the Reagan family dynamic.

Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan (Wahlberg) after he relocates to Boston to support his injured son Sean (Mika Amonsen), eventually retiring from the NYPD and transferring permanently to the Boston Police Department. The series also centres on the Silver family, including DA Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), Detective Lena Silva (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner). With most of the Reagan clan and Danny's girlfriend Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) still based in New York, recurring guest appearances from Blue Bloods cast members like Estes are expected to strengthen the show's connection to its parent series.

Boston Blue is a CBS police drama that spun off from the long-running Blue Bloods franchise. It centres on Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, a New York cop who moves to Boston to look after his injured son and ends up joining the Boston Police Department permanently. The show also introduces a new ensemble, the Silver family, whose members hold various roles in law enforcement and city government.

Blue Bloods itself ran for many years and followed the Reagan family, a multi-generational clan of police officers and prosecutors, so Boston Blue was built to carry some of that show's appeal into a new setting while adding fresh characters. Because Danny's relatives and partner remain in New York in the story, the two shows are linked but largely separate in their day-to-day plots.

Will Estes is an actor who played Jamie Reagan, one of Danny's brothers, throughout Blue Bloods. His involvement in Boston Blue matters because it ties the newer series more closely to the original show and its established characters and fan base.
