Brandon Sanderson Is Done With the Mistborn Screenplay, but Says ‘There Are Many Drafts to Come’

IGN · 5 hours ago

Author Brandon Sanderson has completed the first draft of his screenplay for a Mistborn film adaptation, though he has cautioned fans that many more drafts lie ahead before the project moves further forward. The update matters for followers of the Cosmere universe, as it marks the next stage in what has so far been a rapid development process for a screen adaptation announced only in February 2026, with progress now expected to slow while the draft undergoes extensive feedback.

Sanderson revealed the milestone in a recent YouTube update, noting he will be gathering considerable feedback from editors and Apple TV before further work begins, suggesting a second draft may be some way off. With his attention temporarily freed from the screenplay, he says he is returning to writing Ghostbloods, the first book in Mistborn Era 3, due in 2028. In the meantime, he is preparing to launch Rift Wake, a new series in his Cytoverse universe sharing a timeline with his Skyward books, on 1 September, alongside an already-announced Skyward TV adaptation from the studio behind the One Piece live-action series.
