The estate of late former MASTODON guitarist Brent Hinds has clarified that its lawsuit is primarily about unresolved financial interests in the band and related businesses, rather than an attempt to obtain a windfall. It says Hinds sought an accounting and separation of his interests after leaving the group, but died before receiving compensation, and has called for compassion and respect while the legal process continues.

The estate claims Hinds never accepted a proposed $80,000 buyout, which it has not cashed pending a full accounting. It also objects to MASTODON using his recognisable image on the album “Marrow Deep”, arguing that this raises questions about merchandising rights and whether his estate remains entitled to related revenues; the band has denied ill intent and expressed regret that the private dispute became public.
