Former foreign secretary David Miliband has argued that Brexit weakened Britain economically and politically, describing the country as “a bobbing cork in the sea”. He called for a new, formal relationship with the EU to repair what he sees as damage caused by leaving the Customs Union and Single Market.

Miliband said Brexit had created difficulties for exporters, travellers and fishermen, while reducing the UK’s influence in Europe and global affairs. He criticised Keir Starmer’s lack of a clear long-term vision, expressed confidence that Andy Burnham would pursue closer EU ties, and said Britain’s relationship with Europe should be transformed within the next parliament.
