Brian May Clears Up Queen’s Live Future: ‘I’m on a Break’

Rolling Stone ·

Brian May says he is enjoying time at home and is not currently eager to tour with Queen, but he has not ruled out performing again. The guitarist is focusing on studio work, including music for the upcoming film *Masters of the Universe*, while reflecting on Queen’s film scores and a restored concert film.

May described building a rock version of the *Masters of the Universe* Eternia theme with Daniel Pemberton, the Darkness, and Rufus Taylor. He said the Darkness’ Justin Hawkins recorded vocals remotely while on tour, and Dan Hawkins played bass. May also recalled that Queen’s 1980 *Flash Gordon* score was an unconventional project at the time, with the band believing rock music could create the right atmosphere for a film.

In short

  • Brian May is taking a break from live shows.

Explained simply

Queen are a British rock band whose best-known line-up included guitarist Brian May, singer Freddie Mercury, drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon. Mercury died in 1991; May and Taylor have continued to perform as Queen with other singers, including Adam Lambert.

Queen have also made music for films. Their 1980 soundtrack to Flash Gordon mixed rock songs with music written to accompany the film, a science-fiction story about a hero travelling to the planet Mongo. More recently, May has worked with composer Daniel Pemberton on music for a new Masters of the Universe film, based on the fantasy world of Eternia.
