EDF Energy's chief executive has warned that Britain is facing a second significant energy crisis, with household energy bills predicted to surge by 16 per cent in January 2027. This follows a 4 per cent rise implemented today affecting over four million homes, and represents the largest increase since January 2023. The anticipated crisis stems from geopolitical conflicts disrupting gas supplies, particularly the US-Iran war and ongoing tensions with major gas suppliers Russia and Qatar.

The typical dual-fuel household bill is expected to reach £1,999 annually in January 2027, an increase of £276 from current levels. The forecast comes as European gas storage facilities stand at only 65 per cent capacity—the lowest levels for September in 15 years—raising concerns about supply resilience through the winter months. Experts note that even if the Middle East conflict were to end immediately, resulting supply disruptions would likely persist for several months, and Europe may need to purchase additional gas next summer to rebuild depleted stocks, potentially driving up prices further.
