British Gas refunds former Rebel Energy customer £1,264 after 18 months
A reader who had switched energy suppliers on the day Rebel Energy collapsed spent nearly 18 months trying to recover £1,264 in credit. British Gas, appointed to take over Rebel’s customers, eventually refunded the money after the consumer case was raised with the company.
The reader had begun switching to Ovo on 1 April 2025, while British Gas started supplying Rebel’s 90,000 customers from 6 April. British Gas said a temporary account needed to be created to issue the refund, but the reader left before that process was completed. The money arrived on 6 October, with compensation increased from £200 to £350 after further intervention.
In short
- British Gas returned the reader’s £1,264 credit.
- The refund took nearly 18 months after Rebel Energy collapsed.
- British Gas also paid £350 for the inconvenience.
