British Gas warning over ‘£22 refunds’ message to households
A phishing email pretending to be from British Gas claims households can claim an account-credit refund. Recipients are urged not to click its link, which leads to a fake site designed to steal personal details.
An example shared by Which? says the recipient has £22.45 to claim. British Gas says genuine account emails include the customer’s name and reference number and come from its listed addresses or domains; it will not email from public services such as Gmail or Yahoo. Suspicious emails can be forwarded to [email protected], and fake websites reported to the National Cyber Security Centre. Which? also warns that scammers are exploiting news of a £100 government Household Energy Payment for 20 million eligible households in council tax bands A to D.
