John McEntire recorded the album, which also includes occasional vocals from Amalea Tchilds and strings performed by Lia Kohl and Macie Stewart. Explained simply
Brokeback is a largely instrumental rock project led by Doug McCombs, a Chicago musician also known for his work with the band Tortoise. The project’s music is built around guitars, bass and drums, with arrangements that often leave space for repetition and subtle changes.
McCombs is joined in the current line-up by guitarist James Elkington, bassist Peter Croke and drummer Areif Sless-Kitain. The album was recorded by John McEntire, with occasional vocals from Amalea Tchilds and string parts by Lia Kohl and Macie Stewart.
The new record follows the project’s previous album, released in 2016, and is due out on the independent label Thrill Jockey. Its release brings together musicians with different roles in the recording, including performers who add vocals and strings to the mainly instrumental sound.
