Bruce Davis, who served as chief executive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for 22 of his 30 years with the organisation, has died aged 83 following a battle with leukaemia. He died on Saturday evening, his wife Joann confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. During his tenure Davis had a significant influence on Hollywood and the wider film industry, overseeing the Academy through the terms of six presidents and shaping many of its key institutions.

Davis joined the Academy in 1980 after moving to Los Angeles to pursue screenwriting, initially arranging seminars before becoming executive director in 1989. Under his leadership, staffing grew from 75 to 200, and he oversaw the relocation of the Margaret Herrick Library and the establishment of the Academy's film archive at the Pickford Center in 2002, though his efforts to secure funding for an Academy museum were stalled by the financial crisis. He retired in 2011 and was succeeded by Dawn Hudson, later going on to write a history of the Academy published in 2022. He is survived by his wife and four daughters.
