BTS Will Not Enter ‘Arirang’ Songs for Consideration at 2027 Grammy Awards

Billboard · 5 hours ago

BTS have announced they will not submit any songs from their comeback album *ARIRANG* for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. All seven members posted identical statements on Instagram saying they want music to "be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language," a comment widely read as an implicit criticism of the Recording Academy's newly created Best Asian Pop Music Performance category and its "meaningful use" of Asian language requirement.

The boycott comes despite a strong comeback year for BTS following their military service, with *ARIRANG* debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 641,000 units, the biggest opening week for a group album in over a decade. The group has previously earned five Grammy nominations, including three consecutive nods for best pop duo/group performance, and has performed on the Grammy telecast twice. Their withdrawal echoes past snub-driven boycotts by artists such as Drake, The Weeknd and Morgan Wallen, and comes amid wider criticism that the new Asian pop category could sideline Asian acts from higher-profile General Field and pop performance categories, though artists remain free to compete in General Field categories regardless.
