The full Moon of July, known as the Buck Moon, illuminated skies over Devon and Cornwall on Tuesday night, delighting stargazers and photographers across the South West. The name derives from the time of year when male deer, or bucks, grow new antlers, and it is one of several traditional names given to the July full Moon.

The Moon is expected to reach its peak at 15:36 BST on Wednesday, with forecasters predicting clear skies after dark that should allow further good views. It is also referred to as the Thunder Moon by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, owing to the summer storms typical of the month, and as the Hay Moon after the July hay harvest. Weather Watchers in locations including Braunton, St Erme, Looe and Plymouth captured images of the Moon, some showing it appearing unusually large on the horizon.
