Bungie decide their destiny is to do more Destiny after all, pledging to bring back vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns while declaring that Marathon “needs to evolve”
Bungie has reversed its decision to stop developing Destiny 2, announcing that the series is "foundational" to its future and pledging to restore previously removed campaigns, destinations, and raids. The reversal comes after significant player backlash and is accompanied by a leadership change, with new studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon general manager Josh Deane acknowledging that the studio "lost sight" of prioritising players and apologising for the loss of trust caused by recent layoffs and developmental missteps.
The studio plans to reinstate removed Destiny 2 content to buy time for a more thoughtfully developed future for the franchise, whilst simultaneously restructuring how it handles Marathon, which it admits "did not reach as many players as hoped." Concurrently, Bungie is ditching seasonal updates for Marathon in favour of a relaunch strategy beginning with a December PvE update. The company has implemented operational changes including simplified priorities, reduced competing initiatives, and greater emphasis on player satisfaction in measuring success, though no Destiny 3 announcement has been made.
