Bungie has announced further details regarding updates to its shooter Marathon, revealing a December release for the Symbiosis update followed by a substantially larger update planned for March 2027. These announcements form part of the studio's broader strategy to sustain player engagement with the game, which has faced considerable criticism since launch.

The December Symbiosis update will introduce a team deathmatch mode, a permanent player-versus-environment mode for skill experimentation, and a complete overhaul of the Perimeter zone featuring a new boss encounter called the Tick Queen. New features include a high-performance shell archetype called the Bishop for experienced players, and a social space with firing range to improve new player onboarding. The March 2027 update, described as "meaningfully larger than Symbiosis," will feature interconnected permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP systems, additional zones with new alien enemies, enhanced shell progression, and more focused narrative questlines, forming what Bungie describes as a foundation for continued growth throughout 2027.
