Burnley turn to former CSKA Moscow manager Fabio Celestini as new head coach
Burnley have appointed former CSKA Moscow manager Fabio Celestini as head coach, four days after sacking Nicky Hayen. The club are 22nd in the Championship after winning only one of their first 12 league matches since relegation, making the appointment an urgent attempt to turn around a poor start.
Celestini, 50, left CSKA Moscow in May and has managed several Swiss clubs, including Basel, whom he led from the bottom of the table to a league and cup double in 18 months. Burnley have not announced the length of his contract; his first match in charge is Saturday’s home game against Portsmouth. He won 35 caps for Switzerland as a player.
In short

Explained simply
Burnley are a football club in Lancashire who play in the Championship, the second tier of English men’s football. They were relegated from the Premier League before this season, so their aim is to regain a place in the top division.
Fabio Celestini is a Swiss former player and manager who has coached clubs in Switzerland and Russia. At Basel, he led the side from the bottom of the league to winning both the league title and cup.
A club’s head coach oversees training and decides how the team plays and who is selected. Burnley’s position near the bottom of the table means results in the Championship will shape their prospects of avoiding a further fall and returning to the Premier League.
